O presidente de Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou, defendeu hoje que a atribuição do Nobel da Paz ao dissidente chinês Liu Xiaobo tem um "significado histórico" para o desenvolvimento da China em matéria de direitos humanos.
Ma Ying-jeou felicitou hoje Liu Xiaobo e sublinhou, numa nota oficial, que a distinção tem um "significado histórico importante para o desenvolvimento dos direitos humanos na China e para a sociedade chinesa em geral".
"O desenvolvimento económico da China impressionou o mundo e irá ganhar o reconhecimento da população de Taiwan e da comunidade internacional se o país conseguir progressos em matéria de direitos humanos", acrescentou.
O presidente de Taiwan reiterou o apelo a Pequim para ser mais tolerante com os dissidentes de modo a "demonstrar que a ascensão do país tem fins pacíficos".

Ma Ying-jeou congratulated Liu Xiaobo and underlined in a statement that the distinction has a "great historic significance for the development of human rights in China and for Chinese society in general."
"The economic development of China stunned the world and will gain the recognition of Taiwan people and international community that the country can progress in human rights," he added.
The Taiwanese president reiterated the call for Beijing to be more tolerant of dissent in order to "demonstrate that the country's rise is peaceful."
